A terrible waste of digital paper

So last night i actually had a couple minutes to sketch for once. i defaulted to the traditional Intuos 3 and photoshop, rather than something more practical like paper and a pencil. Oh well. I've been really enjoying the work of argentenian artist Carlos Nine lately... this image isn't exactly inspired by his work per se, but i like the loose and unfinished look of it for some reason. I've been looking at Nine's sketchbook Gesta Dei alot lately. it's a current fave

anyways, at least i got off my ass and updated this place again. One of these days, i may defy the odds and actually make a habbit of doing that.

Well, Opperation: Get BOB A Job was a success! Tomorrow morning, bright and early, I start at LucasArts as an environment artist. I'll be working on something monumentally awesome, that I obviously can't talk about. Anyways, this is pretty much a dream come true, and the education I will be recieving there will be second to none. It's a huge opportunity for me to grow.

Playing With Shapes

So, tonight i decided to mess around a bit with different kinds of faces. i drew a simple shape, and tried to make it in to a face. some turned out better than others, but i had fun at least. that's all for today

i love "new book day"

see, about once every month or two, i find a good enough reason to order some books from france. it's almost like x-mas, the feeling of tearing into an amazon france or fnac box... uncovering the treasure burried within.

Yesterday, was such a day.

So my excuse THIS time to place a large enough order (i try to keep it to 4 books at a time) was that a co-worker of mine was thinking about ordering the enrique fernandez books that i got him hooked on. Of course, logic stepped in and i piggy-backed my order on his to "save on shipping" (even though i doubt i really saved much at all). oh well, it was justification enough for me :)

i have a major vice, and it is european comic books > bande dessine. the order included:

Le Magicien D'Oz : tome 3
Belladone: tome 2
Blacksad: tome 3
Blacksad: L'histoire des aquarelles

such bliss! i discovered enrique fernandez's work when i was aimlessly surfing french comic book (BD... no, not that kind) sites, and ran across a strikingly charming cover to Le Magicien D'Oz : tome 1.

I just love his use of color and dramatic/emphasized shapes. i was immediately hooked. so, obviously, books 2 and 3 in the series were a must buy for me. enrique also did a book before the oz series titled Les Liberateurs (recently released in french). i picked this up as well, and i'm rather overwhelmed by its awesomeness too. It turns out that Mr Fernandez has a blog as well that i've been checking regularly for the past several months... check it out

I love his style of drawing... i find it very reminiscent of the 2d Dreamworks animated features (intended as a compliment)

Blacksad is awesome as usual... but the first issue is still my favorite. L'histoire des aquarelles is a great companion book to the previously released Blacksad: sketch files (translated in english and released here by IBooks). this Aquarelles book (watercolors) deals entirely with the coloring of the 3 books in the blacksad series. it's amazing to see Guarnido do color study after color study, to find the perfect color theme before painting over the original inked page. this book has a lengthly commentary that i intend to slowly work my way through (me having not-the-best french translation skills).

well, to wrap things up, these books are an excellent addition to my ever growing library of BD books. i couldn't recomend them more highly, so if you're in to importing... don't pass these up!

It's been a busy past couple of weeks for me. I got engaged right before X-mas, and it's been a whirlwind of friends, family and work ever since :D

Well, enough of that... here's another work in progress on that sketch i posted last time. The composition and such still needs a lot of work, but i kinda like where it's going. after i solidify things a bit more with the value, i'm gonna go back in and clean up the line drawing. I'm actually looking forward to detailing in the Bistro environment... i've never drawn a restaurant before. anyways... i need to do a better job of keeping this blog alive, sorry about that.

Below is a sketch i'm kinda working on right now. it's very much a work in progress... I plan on re-composing the entire background to be a bit more proportinate, and also more suiting a decent composition. this is just where i'm leaving it tonight

and this obligatory hook doodle was a test-drive of Alias Aketchbook Pro 2. It's a fun program, but i think i'm sticking with photoshop and painter for my digital doodlin

I've been really busy with work lately, so that's my excuse for the lack of posts. I'll be back soon (i hope) with an update of the Cafe drawing.

and so far i'm not off to the best start.

oh well.

The geek in me tonight made me drive 20 minutes to Wal-Mart so that i could play the demo unit of the Xbox 360. I'll start by saying that the console itself is smaller than i expected, and it looks pretty damn sweet. the controller is size-wise somewhere between the Xbox's controller-S and a PS2 controller. it's small, but damn rad. it's the best controller i've used. it just felt... right

Unfortunately, the kiosk was set up in such a way that if you were 3 feet tall, the controller would be at an optimal height. but wait, it gets better. the 16:9 "HD" display tv was maybe 8 feet off the ground, directly above the kid-friendly controller, so when a 6'1" fella like me was playing it, it was more than uncomfortable. my hands were on the controller down by my knees, and my head was kicked back all the way looking up (pezz dispenser-esque) at a monitor that wasn't even hooked up right. my neck still aches. For a system that's banking on the HD gamers of the world, you'd think that they could sell it better if they actually hooked it up to the tv properly. the 360 was displaying in 480i [/geektalk] and it sure wasn't flattering. oh well, when i hook mine up, that mistake won't be made.

i played a bit of Kameo. it looked great, and played just like i expected. cool! Next i tried the demo of Call of Duty 2... that was just awesome. I'll have to get this. While the King Kong demo was loading, the game tester in me (well, the 2 months i was one) decided to press the guide button on the controller to see what would happen. well, that loading screen never went away. i locked that 360 up good. it's ok, my neck was hurting anyways.

after that, i scooted across the street to tower records and picked up Kubrick's The Killing, and Jarmusch's Dead Man for $9 each... hot damn! Black and white movies rawk!

wait, this is supposed to be about art and stuff right? crap, sorry about that.

last week i joined up with http://chepeng.blogspot.com/ It's a group of rad artists posting rad pictures. i saw it as a good source of motivation and inspiration, and i'm very grateful to be involved.

He's a swell guy that i worked on the Transformers: Genesis book with a couple years back. like many contributors, our work wasn't published in that volume, and also like many, we were never paid for our work. it was at least a fun experience. i'll have to post the drawings we did sometime. anyways, Jamie's an awesome guy (the best inker i know), so stop on by and tell him Bob sent ya.

well, i think that's enough for tonight. Half Life 2: the Lost Coast has finished downloading, so i'm gonna go play that and then head off to bed. It's been fun
